The Recharge360 Health Scan
Data-driven prevention is the foundation of an effective health policy. With Recharge360's AI-driven Health Scan, you offer employees a clinically validated tool to monitor their own vitality. In this document, we explain in detail the scientific operation, strict privacy safeguards (AVG), regulations and integration of follow-up and coaching.
1. What exactly is the Recharge360 Health Scan?
The Health Scan is a digital, preventive wellbeing tool. Through the standard webcam of a smartphone or laptop, the application records objective health parameters in 20 seconds. This physiological data is combined with subjective input (a short, validated questionnaire) to give employees a complete and holistic understanding of their mental and physical fitness, stress level and energy balance.
2. How does measurement through a standard camera technically work?
The technology uses remote photoplethysmography (rPPG). This process involves a number of secure and automated steps:
- Face Detection & ROI: Algorithms detect the face and correct for motion. Specific Regions of Interest (ROI) are then selected: spots on the face with the best blood flow.
- Signal extraction: Ambient light penetrates the skin and reflects on the circulatory system. The camera records micro-color changes in the pixels that occur with each heartbeat.
- Data conversion: Through advanced signal processing and machine learning, this raw optical signal is converted into a qualitative PPG waveform. From this waveform, objective health parameters are calculated.
3. What specific biomarkers are measured?
The algorithms extract multiple parameters crucial for monitoring stress and recovery. The most important are:
- Heart rate (BPM): Resting heart rate.
- Heart rate variability (HRV): The fluctuation in time between successive heartbeats. HRV is one of the best-studied, objective indicators of balance in the autonomic nervous system and brain-body interactions.
- Breathing rate: The number of breaths per minute.
- Physiological stress indicators: Derived values that provide insight into acute stress and parasympathetic recovery.
4. What is the academic and scientific rationale?
The underlying signal extraction technology has been developed and validated in close collaboration with leading academic and technological institutions, including Ghent University, TU Delft and research center imec.
The accuracy and precision of the AI models are continuously evaluated through comparative analyses with state-of-the-art medical equipment (such as pulse oximeters and ECGs) and internationally recognized measurement instruments (such as the PHQ-9 and GAD-7 questionnaires). Currently, more than 1 million validated clinical data points are used to train and test the models.
5. How do you guarantee that the models are inclusive and free of bias?
An absolute prerequisite for the deployment of biometric AI is the absence of algorithmic bias. The models were trained and extensively tested on subjects with widely varying skin colors. The ongoing validation reports show that there is no performance loss in people with darker skin colors. For each demographic group, the margin of error (e.g., for heart rate measurement) remains structurally below the strict clinical acceptance limit of 5 beats per minute.
6. Is the technology classified as a medical device (CE mark)?
There is an important distinction between the underlying technology engine and the final application:
- The core engine: The technology that extracts the physiological signals (rPPG) from the video images is classified and certified as a CE-marked Class I medical device.
- The user application: The Recharge360 Health Scan, including the dashboard and advisories, is designed and positioned as a preventive wellbeing solution. It offers self-insight and lifestyle advice, but expressly does not make medical diagnoses or provide clinical decision support. It never replaces the judgment of an occupational physician or medical specialist.
7. How are data protection and privacy (AVG/GDPR) technically secured?
Privacy and information security are embedded at the core of the architecture through Privacy by Design:
- Explicit consent: The measurement can start only after active, explicit permission (consent) from the user.
- Full pseudonymization: No directly traceable personal data (such as name or e-mail address) are associated with the biometric scan. Processing takes place solely on the basis of a unique, non-reducible identifier.
- Security standards: Our technology partner is ISO 27001-certified (the international standard for information security) and the platform undergoes periodic independent penetration testing to ensure security.
8. Do we as employers have access to individual results?
No. The results of the Health Scan are strictly confidential and only viewable by the individual employee. Employees of HR, the MT or direct managers do not have access to personal dashboards in any way. However, we can make aggregated, fully anonymized data available at organizational level to guide organization-wide vitality policy, provided the group size is ample enough to exclude traceability.
9. How does the technology relate to the (European) AI Act?
Proactive action is taken to comply with current and future legislation surrounding Artificial Intelligence (AI Act).
- AI is used exclusively for feature extraction (analyzing pixels) and not for end-to-end, automated decision-making about individuals.
- An internal AI Management System (AIMS) was proactively implemented and an independent external AI risk assessment conducted. Human oversight (human-in-the-loop) is secured during development, clinical validation and implementation.
11. What is the process when an employee achieves anomalous scores?
The scan deliberately avoids alarmist or judgmental medical labels (such as "dangerous" or "bad"). A suboptimal score is signaled in the dashboard as a signal to make timely adjustments. For discrepancies - for example, when the physiological measurement indicates high stress, but the subjective questionnaire does not - this is specifically interpreted as an early physical warning before symptoms are consciously felt. The employee is then immediately and seamlessly directed to solution-oriented, preventive content within the Recharge360 environment.
12. How is access to human coaching and follow-up arranged?
Digital triage is strong, but human contact often remains necessary for behavior change. From the scan results and the e-learning modules offered, there is a seamless escalation line:
- Employees can book a confidential 1-on-1 consultation with a certified Recharge360 coach directly from the platform.
- This coach (after permission from the employee) has insight into the context and helps to translate the results into a pragmatic, personal action plan aimed at sustainable employability and recovery.
13. What is the burden on our internal IT department upon implementation?
The impact on your IT infrastructure is minimal. The solution is cloud-based and hardware-independent.
- No wearables or specific measurement devices need to be purchased or managed.
- The application runs in a protected environment, requires no local software installations and can be easily linked to your existing health portal or intranet via SSO or API integration.
