Drive employee wellbeing in 10 steps and make more profit!

Investment in employee wellbeing leads to higher productivity, performance and customer loyalty.

In recent years, the term "employee wellbeing" has become increasingly central within organizations. This is good news for employees, of course. But what about for organizations? Does investing in it lead to higher productivity and are there other tangible benefits for the organization? In other words: is employee wellbeing profitable?

Employee wellbeing: higher productivity and performance

This is in 2019 investigated by Belgian professor Jan-Emmanuel de Neve. This large-scale study looked at 339 surveys covering a total of 1,882,131 employees and the performance of 82,248 business units. This data came from 230 independent organizations across 49 industries in 73 countries. In other words, a broad survey.

And what turned out: there is indeed a connection between employee wellbeing and higher company productivity and performance. Here, the most relevant four key performance indicators:

  • Customer loyalty
  • Productivity of employees
  • Profitability of the company
  • Staff turnover

The study revealed a substantial relationship between employee wellbeing and customer loyalty. It also found a substantial negative relationship between employee wellbeing and employee turnover. The relationship between employee wellbeing and productivity was strong and positive.

What this means? Satisfied employees stay longer, are more productive and make for more loyal customers. This in turn is reflected in company profitability, where there was also a positive correlation.

More sales

Another study focused on the relationship between employee wellbeing and sales and has shown that employees who are positive and satisfied achieve 13% higher sales results versus employees who are not. De Neve talks more about this in the video below:
